Según la tradición, la Virgen se le apareció a Juan Diego en el cerro del Tepeyac y le habló tiernamente:
“¿No estoy yo aquí que soy tu madre?”
Le encargó que erigieran ahí un templo en su honor, dejando estampada su imagen en la tilma, el 12 de diciembre de 1531.

According to tradition, the Virgin appeared to Juan Diego on the Tepeyac Hill. She spoke tenderly to him: “Am I not here, I who am your mother?”, and requested a shrine in her honor lefting her image stamped on his tilma on December 12, 1531.
