Saint George was a great Roman soldier during the rule of Emperor Diocletian. When the Emperor ordered the persecution of the Christians in the year 303, George confessed his faith and died. He was transferred from Cappadocia to Lydda (Lod) and was venerated as a martyr. His cult spread rapidly.

The legend of Saint George and the dragon originates from the 9th century Golden Legend book, which brings together stories of many Christian saints and martyrs, serving as inspiration for artists.

In Lod lies his crypt and his main sanctuary. His feast is celebrated on April 23.

San Jorge fue un gran soldado romano durante el gobierno del emperador Diocleciano. Cuando éste ordenó la persecución de los cristianos del año 303, Jorge confesó su fe y murió. Fue trasladado de Capadocia a Lydda (actual Lod), siendo venerado como mártir. Su culto se extendió rápidamente.

La leyenda de San Jorge y el dragón se origina con el libro la Leyenda Dorada, del siglo IX, que reúne historias de muchos santos y mártires cristianos, sirviendo de inspiración a los artistas.

En Lod se encuentra su cripta y principal santuario. Su fiesta se celebra el 23 de Abril.
